In 1937 Reza Shah Pahlavi's security services arrested 53 prominent Marxist intellectuals — predominantly young, university-educated men from middle-class families — in a sweeping crackdown on the Communist Party of Iran. The detainees, led by Dr. Taqi Arani, became known as the Group of Fifty-Three (Panjah-o Se Nafar). The arrests effectively destroyed the Communist Party of Iran as an organised force. Several detainees died under torture or in prison; Arani himself died in Qasr Prison in 1940 under disputed circumstances. After Reza Shah's forced abdication in 1941, the surviving members were released under Soviet-Allied pressure. They subsequently founded the Tudeh Party of Iran in 1941, which became the most significant left-wing political organisation in Iranian history.
