The Iranian Oil Bourse (International Oil Bourse on Kish Island) opened on 17 February 2008, establishing a commodity exchange for trading oil and petrochemical products in Iranian rials and other non-dollar currencies. The bourse was a signature policy of the Mahmoud Ahmadinejad government, aimed at reducing reliance on the US dollar in global oil trade and circumventing Western financial pressure. Finance Minister Davoud Danesh-Jafari was closely involved in its creation as part of his tenure overseeing economic policy. The bourse was established on Kish Island in the Persian Gulf, designated as a free trade zone. While hailed domestically as a challenge to dollar dominance, its actual trading volumes remained limited relative to global oil markets.
