On 20 January 2007, a team of nine to twelve militants disguised as an American security detail — wearing US military uniforms, carrying American weapons, and travelling in black GMC Suburbans — raided the Joint Provincial Coordination Center in Karbala, Iraq, killing five US soldiers and wounding three others. The attack was planned by IRGC Quds Force commander Abdul Reza Shahlai and executed by the Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq militia. US intelligence discovered satellite imagery showing an exact mockup of the Karbala compound inside Iran, believed to have been used for rehearsal. The US State Department later offered a $15 million reward for information on Shahlai.
