The British Institute of Persian Studies (BIPS) promotes scholarship and research on all aspects of Iran and the wider Persianate world — including Afghanistan, Central Asia, and the Caucasus. Founded in 1961 during a British state visit to Iran, it opened a purpose-built institute in northern Tehran in 1976, which remarkably remained open after the 1979 Revolution. Funded by the British Academy, it publishes the journal IRAN (since 1963) and awards research and travel grants. Ali M. Ansari was elected President in 2023.
