Salam (سلام, 'Hello/Peace') was a highly influential reformist daily published from 9 February 1991 to 7 July 1999. Its name was given by Ahmad Khomeini, son of the Supreme Leader. Publisher was reformist cleric Mohammad Mousavi Khoeiniha; editor-in-chief was Abbas Abdi. Salam built reformist momentum ahead of Khatami's 1997 election. Its closure on 7 July 1999 — after publishing a leaked MOIS document about plans to restrict the press — directly ignited the July 1999 student uprising, the largest protests in Iran since 1979. At least four students were killed when security forces attacked Tehran University dormitories.
