Ali Ghanaatkar served as the top prosecutor attached to Evin Prison, Tehran's principal facility for political prisoners. In this role he oversaw prosecutions before the Islamic Revolutionary Courts, including show trials of dissidents, journalists, dual nationals, and political prisoners. He was killed in an Israeli strike during the Twelve-Day War in June 2025. His death was noted by human rights advocates given Evin prosecutors' historic role in overseeing the torture and execution of political prisoners.
