Amir Abbas Hoveyda
امیرعباس هویداPrime Minister of Iran (1965–1977)
Amir Abbas Hoveyda served as Prime Minister of Iran for twelve years (1965–1977), making him the longest-serving prime minister in Iranian history. A technocrat and loyal servant of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, he oversaw a period of rapid modernisation and economic growth fuelled by oil revenues, implementing the Shah's White Revolution reforms. He was also a founding member of the Iran-e Novin (New Iran) Party.
Following the 1979 Iranian Revolution, Hoveyda was arrested in the early weeks of February 1979. Despite having been dismissed from office two years earlier and having made no attempt to flee, he was held for months before being brought before the Islamic Revolutionary Courts. On 7 April 1979 he was summarily tried and executed by Sadegh Khalkhali's revolutionary tribunal — the most prominent victim of the post-revolution executions of 1979. He was 59 years old. His trial lasted a matter of hours and denied him adequate legal representation.
