Hossein Makki
حسین مکیCo-founder of National Front; nationalist politician and historian
Hossein Makki was an Iranian nationalist politician, historian, and parliamentarian who played a central role in the oil nationalisation movement. In 1949 he co-founded the National Front of Iran alongside Mohammad Mossadegh, Karim Sanjabi, and other nationalist figures.
Makki was among the most active campaigners for the nationalisation of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company and served as a member of the National Consultative Assembly (Majlis), where he was a vocal advocate for Iranian sovereignty over its oil resources. He was part of the National Front's initial core leadership and worked closely with Mossadegh during the oil crisis of 1951–1953.
After the 1953 coup d'état that overthrew Mossadegh's government, Makki's relationship with the National Front became more complex. He later drifted away from the mainstream of the Front and at times took positions at variance with the Mossadeghist line, leading to tensions with figures like Karim Sanjabi. He was also a prolific historian and writer on modern Iranian political history.
He died in January 1999.
