Monireh Gorji

Monireh Gorji was an Islamic scholar and the only woman among the 73 members of the Assembly of Experts for the Constitution in 1979. Elected from Tehran Province on the Islamic Republican Party ticket with over 1.3 million votes, she was a Quran scholar and mujtahid. Despite her IRP affiliation, she raised objections during the constitutional debates about restrictions being imposed on women in the name of Islam. She continued her scholarly career in Quranic studies and Islamic jurisprudence.
