On 14 August 2002, NCRI spokesman Alireza Jafarzadeh held a press conference in Washington revealing the existence of two secret Iranian nuclear sites: the Natanz uranium enrichment facility and the Arak heavy water production facility, based on intelligence from the Mojahedin-e Khalq's network inside Iran. This revelation triggered the first IAEA inspections of Iranian nuclear sites in 2003, which confirmed traces of enriched uranium despite Iranian decontamination efforts. The disclosure ultimately led to six UN Security Council resolutions against Iran and set in motion the international confrontation over Iran's nuclear program that culminated in the JCPOA.
