The NCRI was co-founded by Massoud Rajavi and President Abolhassan Banisadr on 21 July 1981 as a broad coalition opposing the Islamic Republic. It functions as a parliament-in-exile comprising approximately 540 members, with the Mojahedin-e Khalq as its principal member organization. Maryam Rajavi has served as its President-elect since 1993. Banisadr left the coalition in 1984 over disagreements with Rajavi's leadership. The NCRI is headquartered at Auvers-sur-Oise near Paris and advocates for the overthrow of the Islamic Republic and establishment of a secular democratic government.
