The February 2004 parliamentary election was marked by the Guardian Council's mass disqualification of approximately 2,400 candidates, including most reformist incumbents and all candidates of the Islamic Iran Participation Front. Approximately 80 sitting MPs were barred from seeking re-election. The result was a sweeping conservative victory, with the Abadgaran coalition winning over 190 seats. Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel was elected with 226 of 259 votes, becoming the first non-clerical Speaker since the revolution. Turnout collapsed to around 51%.
