The June 2021 presidential election produced one of the lowest turnouts in the Islamic Republic's history — approximately 48% nationally, and around 26% in Tehran. The Guardian Council disqualified 585 of 592 candidates who registered, approving only seven to run. The disqualifications included former Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani, former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri. Saeed Jalili withdrew before election day to consolidate the hardliner vote. Ebrahim Raisi won with approximately 62% of votes cast. The disqualification of Ali Larijani prompted his brother Sadegh Amoli Larijani to resign from the Guardian Council in protest.
