The Amal Movement (Afwaj al-Muqawama al-Lubnaniyya — Lebanese Resistance Regiments) is a Lebanese Shia political party and militia founded in 1975 by Musa al-Sadr and Mostafa Chamran as the military wing of the Movement of the Deprived. Chamran served as the movement's military commander, establishing training camps in southern Lebanon with support from Palestinian Fatah. In 1982, a faction led by Husayn al-Musawi split from Amal to form Islamic Amal, which later merged into Hezbollah. The movement remains a major political force in Lebanon, distinct from and at times a rival to Hezbollah.
