The IRGC Navy (Niru-ye Daryayi-ye Sepah, NEDSA) is the naval arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, operating separately from the Artesh Navy (NEDAJA). NEDSA focuses on asymmetric warfare in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz: fast-attack craft, anti-ship missiles, sea mines, and harassment of foreign naval and commercial vessels. It controls a network of island bases in the Persian Gulf and has been responsible for numerous documented seizures and confrontations with US Navy vessels in the Gulf. NEDSA doctrine centers on area-denial and the ability to close the Strait of Hormuz in a conflict scenario.
