Semafor is a global news platform launched in October 2022 by former BuzzFeed News editor-in-chief Ben Smith and former Bloomberg Media CEO Justin B. Smith. In September 2023, Semafor journalist Jay Solomon published a landmark investigation, jointly with Iran International, that revealed the Iran Experts Initiative — a covert Iranian Foreign Ministry influence operation in which Western-based academics were recruited to promote Tehran's nuclear negotiating positions in Western media and policy circles.
