Society of Devotees of the Islamic Revolution
جمعیت ایثارگران انقلاب اسلامیThe Society of Devotees of the Islamic Revolution (Jam'iyat-e Isargaran-e Enqelab-e Eslami), commonly known as Isargaran ('the self-sacrificers'), is a principlist Iranian political party founded on 9 April 1997 by veterans of the Iran–Iraq War and former Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commanders. It drew from non-clerical, grassroots revolutionaries rather than seminary elites and served as the ideological continuation of the right wing of the dissolved Mojahedin of the Islamic Revolution organization.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was a founding member of the party. The Isargaran's first major political breakthrough came in the 2003 Tehran Municipal Council elections, where it formed a principlist coalition that swept all 15 seats on low turnout — enabling the council to appoint Ahmadinejad as Mayor of Tehran. That mayoral platform was the direct springboard to his 2005 presidential victory. Lotfollah Forouzandeh, a former IRGC commander, is also a co-founder of the organization.
