Abdolnaser Hemmati is an economist who served as Governor of the Central Bank of Iran (2018–2021) and ran as a presidential candidate in the 2021 election. Masoud Pezeshkian appointed him Finance Minister in August 2024, but he resigned in March 2025. As Central Bank Governor he navigated the severe economic pressure of US sanctions after 2018. His 2021 presidential candidacy was approved by the Guardian Council, making him one of the more moderate candidates allowed to run.
