Masoud Pezeshkian, a cardiac surgeon and long-serving MP for Tabriz, won the snap presidential election of July 2024 following Raisi's death. He ran on a moderate platform and was endorsed by reformist figures including Khatami and Zarif. Ethnically Azerbaijani, he is the first non-Persian-speaking president. He previously served as Minister of Health under Khatami (2001–2005).
