The snap presidential election was triggered by Ebrahim Raisi's death in a helicopter crash on 19 May 2024. The first round was held on 28 June 2024; with no outright majority, a runoff on 5 July 2024 saw Masoud Pezeshkian defeat Saeed Jalili with nearly 16.4 million votes to Jalili's approximately 13.5 million. The result surprised many analysts who had expected a Jalili victory. Reformist consolidation behind Pezeshkian — led by endorsements from Mohammad Khatami and senior figures — proved decisive. Jalili was backed by the Front of Islamic Revolution Stability and had close ties to Mojtaba Khamenei.
