Hassan Ayat was a lawyer and political activist who served as secretary of the Assembly of Experts for the Constitution in 1979. A member of the Islamic Republican Party central committee, he played a key role in inserting the doctrine of velayat-e faqih into the constitution, arguing forcefully for broad powers for the Supreme Leader. He was elected to the first Islamic Consultative Assembly (Majles) in 1980. He was assassinated on 5 August 1981, an attack attributed to the Mojahedin-e Khalq.
