Hossein Mousavian
حسین موسویانResearch Scholar at Princeton University
Seyed Hossein Mousavian is a former Iranian diplomat and nuclear policy scholar. He served as Iran's Ambassador to Germany (1990–1997) and as head of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Supreme National Security Council. His ambassadorship to Germany spanned the September 1992 Mykonos restaurant assassination in Berlin — in which four Kurdish Iranian opposition leaders were killed on orders traced to Iran's top leadership — and the April 1997 Berlin court verdict that directly implicated senior Iranian officials, leading to the expulsion of four Iranian diplomats from Germany, an event that directly affected Mousavian's diplomatic mission. From 2003 to 2005, he was spokesman and member of Iran's nuclear negotiating team under Hassan Rouhani. In 2007, he was briefly arrested on espionage charges widely viewed as politically motivated by hardliners. He subsequently relocated to the United States and became a research scholar at Princeton University's School of Public and International Affairs. He was named in the leaked Iran Experts Initiative emails published by Semafor and Iran International in September 2023 as a participant in the network coordinated by the Iranian Foreign Ministry through IPIS.
