Mykonos Restaurant Assassination

17 Sep 1992

death

On 17 September 1992, gunmen entered the Mykonos Greek restaurant in Berlin and shot dead Sadegh Sharafkandi, Secretary-General of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan, along with PDKI representatives Fattah Abdoli and Homayoun Ardalan, and their translator Nouri Dehkordi. The assassination was carried out by Kazem Darabi, an Iranian national, and Abbas Rhayel, a Lebanese associate. The subsequent trial (1993–1997) produced a landmark verdict finding that the killings were ordered by the Committee for Special Operations, which included Ali Khamenei, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, Ali Fallahian, and Ali Akbar Velayati. This was the first time a European court officially attributed state-sponsored terrorism to the highest levels of the Iranian government, triggering the recall of all EU ambassadors from Tehran.
