Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani was one of the most powerful figures in post-revolutionary Iran. He served as Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly from 1980 to 1989 and as president from 1989 to 1997. A cleric and confidant of Khomeini, he is associated with the pragmatist wing of Iranian politics and championed post-war economic reconstruction. He chaired the Expediency Discernment Council until his death in January 2017.
