The 2005 presidential election resulted in the surprise victory of Tehran mayor Mahmoud Ahmadinejad over Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani in a run-off. Ahmadinejad ran as a populist outsider against the establishment, backed by the Alliance of Builders of Islamic Iran and networks within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Basij. Mehdi Karroubi, who initially led in first-round results before official tallies shifted, alleged fraud. The election marked the beginning of a sharp turn toward hardline populism.
