On 24 April 1990, Kazem Rajavi — professor of political science at the University of Geneva, human rights advocate, and elder brother of MEK leader Massoud Rajavi — was assassinated near his home in Coppet, Switzerland. He was shot at close range by multiple Iranian intelligence agents who had entered Switzerland on diplomatic passports. Ali Fallahian, then intelligence minister under Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, was charged by a Swiss court with masterminding the operation. In 2020, the Swiss case was reopened to be investigated as a crime against humanity.
