Mnar Muhawesh Adley

Founder and CEO of MintPress News; studied in Qom under Grand Ayatollah Jafar Sobhani

Mnar Muhawesh Adley is the founder and CEO of MintPress News, a Minneapolis-based online outlet she founded in 2011. MintPress presents itself as an independent progressive news organization, but has been consistently identified by media analysts, BuzzFeed News, and NewsGuard as publishing content sympathetic to the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad, and hostile to U.S. and Gulf state foreign policy.

Adley has studied in Qom under Grand Ayatollah Jafar Sobhani, a leading Iranian Shia theologian closely associated with the Islamic Republic's ideological establishment. This study connection is significant context for understanding MintPress's editorial orientation, which has functioned as a platform laundering pro-Iran narratives into Western alternative media. MintPress was one of several English-language outlets — alongside Press TV — through which regime-aligned framing on sanctions, proxy conflicts, and Iranian dissident figures was disseminated to Western audiences. Catherine Perez-Shakdam contributed to MintPress between 2014 and 2017.
