Azerbaijan IRGC Terror Plot Foiled
Mar 2026
In March 2026, Azerbaijan's State Security Service (DTX) announced it had foiled a multi-target terror plot orchestrated by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The planned targets included the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline, the Israeli embassy in Baku, a leader of Azerbaijan's Jewish community, and an Ashkenazi synagogue. The plot was masterminded by senior IRGC intelligence officer Ali-Asghar Bardbar Sharamini, with ground coordination by Hafez Tavassoli.
Investigators recovered over seven kilograms of C-4 explosives smuggled into Azerbaijan, including remote-controlled devices hidden at various locations. International arrest warrants were issued for multiple Iranian nationals. The announcement came just days after Iranian drone strikes on Azerbaijan's Nakhchivan exclave, amid escalating tensions linked to the broader US-Israel military campaign against Iran and Azerbaijan's strategic ties with Israel and Turkey.
