The National Liberation Army of Iran (NLA) was the armed wing of the Mojahedin-e Khalq, founded in 1987 in Iraq with Saddam Hussein's support. It fielded approximately 7,000 fighters equipped with Iraqi-supplied weapons and armored vehicles. Its most significant operation was Operation Forough-e Javidan on 26 July 1988, a failed offensive into western Iran that was repelled by Iranian forces with devastating losses. The NLA was effectively disbanded after the 2003 US invasion of Iraq when its members were disarmed by American forces.
