The Iran-Iraq War (1980–1988) was an eight-year conflict initiated by Iraq's invasion of Iran in September 1980. It was the longest conventional war of the twentieth century, killing an estimated 500,000 to 1 million people on both sides. The war shaped a generation of Iranian military and political leaders, particularly those who went on to lead the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Mir-Hossein Mousavi served as prime minister throughout the conflict. The war ended with UN-brokered ceasefire Resolution 598, which Ruhollah Khomeini accepted, comparing it to 'drinking poison'.
