National Trust Party

The National Trust Party (Hezb-e E'temad-e Melli) was founded in 2005 by Mehdi Karroubi after he came third in the first round of the presidential election that year. It positioned itself as a reformist but pragmatic party advocating social freedoms, economic reform, and political pluralism. Karroubi ran for president again under the party's banner in 2009. After the disputed election result and the Green Movement, the party's leadership was suppressed and Karroubi himself was placed under house arrest.
