green movement
Following the disputed June 2009 presidential election in which incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was declared the winner over reformist candidates Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, millions of Iranians took to the streets in the largest protests since the 1979 revolution. The government response was violent; the Basij and IRGC killed dozens of protesters. The movement was suppressed by late 2009, and its leaders Mousavi and Karroubi were placed under house arrest in 2011.
