Ali Motahari

Ali Motahari is the son of the martyred Islamic scholar Morteza Motahhari and the brother-in-law of former Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani. He represented Tehran for three consecutive terms (8th–10th Majlis, 2008–2020), serving as Second Deputy Speaker in the 10th Majlis (2016–2019). A principlist by formal affiliation, he was widely regarded as a maverick who publicly challenged Ahmadinejad, criticised IRGC political interference, and called for the release of Green Movement leaders. He was disqualified by the Guardian Council from the 2020 elections. He holds a PhD in philosophy from the University of Tehran.
