Morteza Motahhari was one of the most influential clerical scholars of the Islamic Revolution. A devoted student of Khomeini in Qom, he co-founded the Hussainiyyah Ershad and the Combatant Clergy Association (JRM). He served as chairman of Khomeini's Council of the Islamic Revolution in early 1979. He was assassinated on 1 May 1979 by the Forqan Group. His intellectual legacy underpins much of the Islamic Republic's ideological framework. He is the father-in-law of former Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani and the father of MP Ali Motahari.
