The June 2009 presidential election was one of the most consequential and disputed in the Islamic Republic's history. Incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was declared the winner with 63% of the vote over reformist challenger Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi. The opposition alleged massive fraud, and the disputed results triggered the Green Movement — the largest protests Iran had seen since the 1979 revolution. The Guardian Council certified the results after a partial recount.
