Mostafa Pourmohammadi

Mostafa Pourmohammadi is a cleric who served as Interior Minister under Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (2005–2008) and later as Justice Minister under Hassan Rouhani (2013–2017). His appointment by Rouhani was controversial and drew protests from human rights organisations, as Pourmohammadi had served as a member of the 'Death Committee' — the three-person panel in Tehran that approved the mass execution of thousands of political prisoners in 1988 following Ruhollah Khomeini's fatwa. He later explicitly defended the executions. He ran in the 2024 presidential election.
