Cristina Fernández de Kirchner

President of Argentina (2007–2015); accused by prosecutor Alberto Nisman of treason for the 2013 MOU with Iran

diplomacy

Cristina Fernández de Kirchner served as President of Argentina from 2007 to 2015, succeeding her husband Néstor Kirchner. During her second term, her government signed the Iran–Argentina MOU on 27 January 2013 — a memorandum of understanding with the Iranian government that established a joint truth commission to reinvestigate the AMIA bombing of 1994. In January 2015, AMIA special prosecutor Alberto Nisman filed a 289-page charging document accusing Kirchner and Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana of treason and cover-up, alleging that the MOU was designed to shield Iranian suspects from Interpol red notices and Argentine prosecution in exchange for oil and trade concessions. On 18 January 2015 — the night before Nisman was scheduled to testify before Congress — he was found dead in his apartment. His death, initially ruled a suicide, was determined to be homicide by a federal court in 2019. The investigation into who ordered the killing and the validity of the treason charges against Kirchner remain contested and politically charged issues in Argentina.
