Alberto Nisman
Argentine federal prosecutor; lead investigator of the AMIA bombing case (2004–2015)
Alberto Nisman was an Argentine federal prosecutor who spent more than a decade as the lead investigator into the AMIA bombing of July 18, 1994 — the deadliest terrorist attack in Argentine history. Appointed in 2004 as the special prosecutor for the AMIA case, Nisman built a comprehensive evidentiary record identifying Iran's Supreme National Security Council as having authorised the attack and naming several Iranian officials and operatives including Mohsen Rabbani, Hadi Soleimanpour, Ahmad Reza Asghari, and Ali Fallahian. In January 2015, Nisman filed a landmark charging document accusing Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman of treason, alleging they had secretly agreed to shield Iranian suspects from prosecution in exchange for a trade deal with Iran — the Iran–Argentina MOU of 2013. On January 18, 2015 — the night before he was scheduled to testify before the Argentine Congress about those charges — Nisman was found dead in his apartment with a gunshot wound to the head. Argentine authorities initially ruled his death a suicide. Subsequent judicial investigations and forensic re-examinations raised serious doubts about that finding, and in 2019 a federal court determined he had been murdered. The exact perpetrators and chain of responsibility remain contested.
