Gholamhossein Mohammadnia is a senior deputy within Iran's Ministry of Intelligence who was posted as Iran's Ambassador to Albania starting in 2016 — assessed by Western analysts as using the diplomatic position as intelligence cover. In December 2018, the Albanian government declared him persona non grata and expelled him for activities 'damaging to national security'. Specifically, Albanian authorities alleged a plot against members of the Mojahedin-e Khalq (MEK) based at Camp Ashraf-3 near Manez, Albania. His expulsion was the first in a series of actions by Tirana against Iranian intelligence operatives — part of the Albania expulsions of Iranian diplomats that culminated in the full severing of diplomatic relations in September 2022.
