Mehdi Bazargan

Founder of Freedom Movement of Iran; Prime Minister of interim government (1979)

Engineer, academic, and political leader. First secretary-general of the Freedom Movement of Iran (1961–1995). Co-founded the movement alongside Mahmoud Taleghani and Yadollah Sahabi as a religiously oriented offshoot of the National Front. Appointed by Ruhollah Khomeini as head of the provisional government after the 1979 revolution. Resigned on 5 November 1979 after the US embassy seizure, declaring he could not govern while revolutionary bodies operated outside his authority. Served in parliament (Majlis) 1980–1984. Died 20 January 1995.
