28 Feb 2026
On 28 February 2026, combined US-Israel precision airstrikes targeted Iran's military and security leadership in Tehran and other locations. The strikes killed Mohammad Pakpour (IRGC Commander-in-Chief), Abdolrahim Mousavi (Chief of the General Staff), Hossein Jabal Amelian (head of SPND), and Reza Mozaffari Nia (former SPND head). Also killed in the February 28 strikes were intelligence and military office figures: Saleh Asadi (Deputy Head of Armed Forces Intelligence), Mohammad Shirazi (Head of the Supreme Leader's Military Office), Akbar Ebrahimzadeh (Deputy Head of the Supreme Leader's Military Office), Mohammad Baseri (senior MOIS official), and Yahya Hosseini Panjaki (Deputy Minister of Intelligence for Israel Affairs). Ali Khamenei was also killed on the same day, triggering a succession crisis within the Islamic Republic. The February 28 strikes represented the most devastating decapitation of Iran's military, intelligence, and nuclear leadership since Operation Rising Lion in June 2025.
