18 Feb 2000
election
The February 2000 parliamentary election produced a landslide victory for the reformist coalition aligned with President Khatami. Reformist parties, led by the Islamic Iran Participation Front, won approximately 195 of 290 seats. It was the high-water mark of the reform movement: the Islamic Iran Participation Front's Mohammad-Reza Khatami topped the Tehran ballot with nearly 1.8 million votes. The 6th Majlis, led by Speaker Mehdi Karroubi, was the most reformist parliament in the Islamic Republic's history and was in constant conflict with the Guardian Council.
