General Staff of the Armed Forces of Iran

The General Staff of the Armed Forces (Setad-e Koll-e Niruhaye Mosallah) is the supreme military coordination body of the Islamic Republic of Iran, directly subordinate to the Supreme Leader. It coordinates both the Artesh and the IRGC, making it the apex of the unified command structure. The Chief of Staff is appointed by and reports directly to the Supreme Leader. Mohammad Bagheri served as Chief of Staff from 2016 until his death on 13 June 2025 in Israeli airstrikes on Tehran. Gholam Ali Rashid served as deputy commander and was killed in the same strike.
