Jame'eh (جامعه, 'Society') was the first of the 'serial newspapers' — the chain of reformist dailies run by Mashallah Shamsolvaezin and co-directed by Hamid Reza Jalalipour that were successively closed and immediately relaunched under new names. Founded in early 1998, it ran a headline quoting Khatami's challenge to the IRGC: 'Society cannot be moved forward by instilling fear.' After suspension and permanent closure, Shamsolvaezin and Jalalipour were jailed 35 days without charge. Upon release, Shamsolvaezin immediately relaunched as Tous.
