The Supreme National Security Council (Shora-ye Ali-ye Amniat-e Melli, SNSC) was established by the 1989 constitutional revision to coordinate Iran's defence, intelligence, and foreign policy. The President chairs it; the Secretary — appointed with the Supreme Leader's approval — is effectively Iran's national security adviser and a direct representative of the Office of the Supreme Leader. The SNSC has also been Iran's primary nuclear negotiating body. Key secretaries include Hassan Rouhani (1989–2005), Ali Larijani (2005–2007), and Saeed Jalili (2007–2013).
